Pandemic Design Studio has developed a body of work that explores the relationship between nature and the built environment. Biomimicry and sculptural interpretation are used to create signature architectural features for hospitality, workplace, public art, retail, and luxury residential environments.

The Origin of the Idea

The concept was inspired by the natural junction of a tree where a branch emerges from the trunk, known as the node. This protected crevice collects moisture and organic matter, creating an ideal habitat for epiphytic plants.

The first ceramic node was developed specifically to support a staghorn fern, translating this natural condition into a simple and elegant architectural form. By reducing the geometry of the node to its essential elements, a ceramic module emerged that could support both plant life and larger compositional possibilities.

A Modular Language

Over time, the collection expanded from an individual planter into a family of components that evolved into a modular design language capable of creating larger biophilic installations while retaining the same organizational logic found in nature.

Compositions may be arranged as dense living walls or selectively dispersed across an architectural surface, creating installations that range from intimate moments to immersive environmental features.

The same design language can be adapted to walls, columns, partitions, freestanding structures, and custom architectural features, giving designers the freedom to develop installations that respond directly to the character and requirements of a project.

Designed to Evolve

The independence of each ceramic element creates unusual freedom for both designers and owners. Living plants, faux plants, air plants, and preserved moss can all be incorporated within the same installation and easily refreshed over time, allowing visual character and maintenance strategies to evolve as needs change.

Rather than prescribing a single planting approach, the system adapts to the goals of each project. The result is a flexible framework that can respond equally well to hospitality, workplace, public art, and residential environments while remaining practical to maintain.

Every project begins with a conversation. Pandemic Design Studio works directly with architects, interior designers, landscape architects, developers, hospitality groups, institutions, and private clients to create installations that reflect the character and ambitions of a space.

The studio's role often extends beyond the ceramic elements themselves, helping teams navigate layout development, fabrication requirements, installation planning, and project coordination from concept through completion.

From Concept to Installation

A custom installation should feel inspiring—not complicated. This short film follows the installation of a residential commission, illustrating how the ceramic elements, mounting system, and installation process come together as a clear and approachable package.

Behind the finished installation is a carefully developed framework of documentation, prefabricated mounting systems, and coordinated production methods designed to simplify execution for clients, designers, and installers alike.

Hospitality at Scale

For a 191-room boutique hotel project, Pandemic Design Studio collaborated with the interior design team to create a custom installation that could be produced, documented, packaged, and installed with precision. Custom backer boards, pre-coordinated layouts, numbered ceramic elements, and an organized fabrication workflow transformed a handcrafted design into a repeatable process that was efficient to deliver and simple to install.

The project reflects a broader philosophy that extends throughout the studio's work: original architectural features deserve original systems that make ambitious ideas practical to realize.
